MeV-energy Xe ion-induced damage in LiF: The contribution of electronic and nuclear stopping mechanisms

The contribution of electronic and nuclear damage mechanisms in the modification of structure and micromechanical properties of LiF crystals irradiated with 52, 224, and 450 MeV Xe ions at fluences 1010–1014 ions cm−2 has been studied. The ion-induced formation of dislocations and hardening in LiF at fluences above 1010 ions cm−2 has been observed. The depth profiles of nanoindentation show a joint contribution of electronic excitation and nuclear (impact) mechanisms to the ion-induced hardening. The electronic excitation mechanism dominates in the major part of the ion range while the impact mechanism prevails in a narrow zone at the end of the ion range. The efficiency of hardening produc…

Photoelectron Emission from Metal Surfaces Induced by VUV-emission of Filament Driven Hydrogen Arc Discharge Plasma

Photoelectron emission measurements have been performed using a filament-driven multi-cusp arc discharge volume production H^- ion source (LIISA). It has been found that photoelectron currents obtained with Al, Cu, Mo, Ta and stainless steel (SAE 304) are on the same order of magnitude. The photoelectron currents depend linearly on the discharge power. It is shown experimentally that photoelectron emission is significant only in the short wavelength range of hydrogen spectrum due to the energy dependence of the quantum efficiency. It is estimated from the measured data that the maximum photoelectron flux from plasma chamber walls is on the order of 1 A per kW of discharge power.

Efficient Linear-Scaling Density Functional Theory for Molecular Systems

Despite recent progress in linear scaling (LS) density function theory (DFT), the computational cost of the existing LS methods remains too high for a widespread adoption at present. In this work, we exploit nonorthogonal localized molecular orbitals to develop a series of LS methods for molecular systems with a low computational overhead. High efficiency of the proposed methods is achieved with a new robust two-stage variational procedure or by replacing the optimization altogether with an accurate nonself-consistent approach. A Hard X-Ray View of Scorpius X-1 with INTEGRAL : Nonthermal Emission?

We present here simultaneous INTEGRAL/RXTE observations of Sco X-1, and in particular a study of the hard X-ray emission of the source and its correlation with the position in the Z-track of the X-ray color-color diagram. We find that the hard X-ray (above about 30 keV) emission of Sco X-1 is dominated by a power-law component with a photon index of ~3. The flux in the power-law component slightly decreases when the source moves in the color-color diagram in the sense of increasing inferred mass accretion rate from the horizontal branch to the normal branch/flaring branch vertex. We present the laboratory results of immersion freezing efficiencies of cellulose particles at supercooled temperature (T) conditions. Three types of chemically homogeneous cellulose samples are used as surrogates that represent supermicron and submicron ice nucleating plant structural polymers. These samples include micro-crystalline cellulose (MCC), fibrous cellulose (FC) and nano-crystalline cellulose (NCC). Sorption Kinetics of Xenon on MFI-Type Zeolite Molecular Sieves

Kinetic uptake data for xenon adsorbed onto large and uniform silicalite-I crystals are presented over a temperature range of 121 K to 296 K. — Adsorption isotherms and corrected diffusion coefficients derived from the uptake curves are given. The heat of adsorption and activation energy of diffusion were estimated from the plots of reciprocal temperature against the logarithm of equilibrium pressure and corrected diffusion coefficients, respectively. — While the corrected diffusion coefficient is independent of coverage for the higher temperatures, it decreases significantly at the lower temperatures investigated (<170 K) when the limiting adsorption capacity has been reached. — Comparing …

Under sun-light illumination, the shape of the atmospheric oxygen bands (O 2 -B, 687 nm and O 2 -A, 760 nm) of the vegetation radiance is modified by chlorophyll fluorescence. However for far-range measurements, atmospheric effects also modify this shape. In this study, measurements in O 2 -A and O 2 -B absorption bands have been performed at different altitudes up to 3123 m over bare soil and wheat fields. It is observed that bands depth increase significantly with altitude. In O 2 -B band, the total magnitude of variation is of the same order of magnitude as the change induced by vegetation fluorescence, while it is much greater in O 2 -A band. Shear Induced Demixing and Rheological Behavior of Aqueous Solutions of Poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)

The interrelation between the phase separation behavior and the rheological performance of aqueous solutions of high molecular weight (M w = 1 600 kg/mol) poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) was investigated. The system demixes upon heating and the cloud point temperature, T cp decreases steadily with rising polymer concentration up to 10 wt.-%. The application of shear supports phase separation and reduces T cp markedly. This observation is interpreted in terms of destruction of intersegmental clusters formed in the quiescent state owing to favorable interactions. Does the Sun Shine byppor CNO Fusion Reactions?

We show that solar neutrino experiments set an upper limit of 7.8% (7.3% including the recent KamLAND measurements) to the fraction of energy that the Sun produces via the CNO fusion cycle, which is an order of magnitude improvement upon the previous limit. New experiments are required to detect CNO neutrinos corresponding to the 1.5% of the solar luminosity that the standard solar model predicts is generated by the CNO cycle.

SphinX soft X-ray spectrophotometer: Science objectives, design and performance

The goals and construction details of a new design Polish-led X-ray spectrophotometer are described. The instrument is aimed to observe emission from entire solar corona and is placed as a separate block within the Russian TESIS X- and EUV complex aboard the CORONAS-PHOTON solar orbiting observatory. SphinX uses silicon PIN diode detectors for high time resolution measurements of the solar spectra in the range 0.8–15 keV. Its spectral resolution allows for discerning more than hundred separate energy bands in this range.
